Dampers are used in the buildings and houses to prevent the spread of smoke and fire from a particular infected area to another. These are basically the passive products which are used in the air-conditioning ducts and ventilations to avoid the flow if the smoke and fire to other parts of a particular area. Another benefit they provide is, that they can be used as an exhaust to suck smoke out of a particular area. While in case of fire, we can push fire extinguishers through them to put off the fire.
They are often called as the Life Safety Dampers. That’s because they play important and vital role in saving peoples life in any emergency situation. They are very commonly used in houses and buildings for long term benefits.
The fire and smoke alarms are connected inside them, so when the sensors sense fire or smoke; the damper opening is closed automatically. Hence, the flow of fire and smoke via the duct system is avoided this way. So the fire or smoke is restricted to a particular area and huge damages are being avoided.
Dynamic: These are the type of dampers, which are used where the HVAC blower remains on during the alarm.
Static: These are the type of dampers, which are used where the HVAC blower remains off during the alarm.
Why are life safety dampers required?
They are required to keep a building safe from any huge loss whenever it experiences a fire situation. The flow of the smoke and fire is prevented from spreading through the duct system. The hazards can be maximum, if the fire spreads through the ducts. So that’s why the usefulness of the dampers is worthwhile.
They are made up of stainless metal and are installed in the openings of the duct system. It consists of an alarm and smoke/fire detecting sensors. Whenever there is such a situation, the sensors detect it and the openings of these dampers close downs automatically. So that is how the flow of the fire is prevented from the rapid flow through the duct system. If we require, then we can open the openings from the backend and exhaust all the smoke from the particular area via Life Safety Dampers. While in situation of the fire we can spray the fire extinguishers and put the fire off.
